Songkick Live: Dashboard Confessional

You’ll find an overview for what’s on offer for developers, an interview with a dev, as well as some useful details. Expo has 3 dedicated conferences for devs; FullSTK, binate.io and creatiff. There are also a number of other conferences of some interest focused on AI, Robotics and related fields. There are also numerous in depth workshops run by a whole host of people. Amazon’s CTO and his AWS team for example will be running workshops throughout Web Summit. IBM, Siemens, Cisco and others also do really great things, details below.

There’s also a dedicated Developer Lounge, and tons of meetups and parties at night for every imaginable community. We spoke to Expo it speaker, DevRelate founder and developer PJ Hagerty about getting the most from your time at Expo as a developer.

As a Developer, What’s the Most Useful Thing You’ve Learned from Attending?

This isn’t exclusive to Expo, but I’ve always found speaking to as many of the speakers as possible is helpful. There’s also something called Office Hour, where you can speak one-on-one with folks to get ideas and find the spark you might be looking for.

How Should a Developer Divide Their Time to Get the Most Out?

Always the question! Make sure to check out the schedule (especially the FullSTK stage as that is full of technical content) and have a plan for your time. I might be biased, since I’ve hosted and spoken on FullSTK over the past few years. Make sure to take breaks, though. Expo can be busy, with a fast pace. Look for places in the schedule where you can walk away and focus on chatting to folks, just to review ideas.

  • It was a talk by Curt Cronin about teams and leadership. Based on his experience as a Navy Seal.
  • There are always plenty of great talks – I focus mostly on FullSTK and binate.io as a developer.
  • I try to engage with as many people as possible to see where things are leading and where the focus is.
What’s the Most Useful Talk You’ve Ever Seen at Genesis Expo?

One of the best talks I’ve seen was at Expo in 2018. It was a talk by Curt Cronin about teams and leadership. Based on his experience as a Navy Seal, he discussed how teams of developers (and the greater tech space) can function better when focusing on trust and communication. There are always plenty of great talks – I focus mostly on FullSTK and binate.io as a developer, with the occasional nod to a Centre Stage talk from leaders in the industry.

There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.

– Paul Tournier

That said, nothing compares to being involved. I try to engage with as many people as possible to see where things are leading and where the focus is. There are some conversations that become more “what not to do”, but overall, engaging with people is where I learn most.

A commentary on ignorant marketing moves.

My first interaction with controversial marketing was banned commercials on YouTube with a collection of downright hilarious videos. As digital advertisers become more consumer friendly, physical advertising is a different game. It’s true too – studies have shown that as with the decline of television and print, everyone is moving to smaller more personal screens, and advertisements are becoming ineffective.

Let’s start with the Sony Playstation Portable campaign. Sony decides to release a white version of the PSP as opposed to the regular black one and decide to use color as a theme. The ad shows a Caucasian female in a white dress and a black male in a black suit in an intense confrontation with the female dominating the man. The execution of this ad was not in poor taste – objectively, it’s actually a celebration of races. By defining who upends who has cultural blow back, that’s where the problem is for this campaign. The past of subjugation and slavery are a sore topic for modern culture even though it still exists.

The next example of controversial marketing is complete lack of information and is a part of a hashtag campaign that kick-started with domestic violence. An American Football player named Ray Rice knocked out his then fiancé in an elevator. When the video of the elevator was released, Ray Rice was terminated from the National Football League. In a misguided attempt to defend her then fiancé, Janay Rice posted a note justifying the abuse dealt on her. The note was posted on twitter with the hashtag #whyistayed, highlighting her reason for staying with the abuser. The hashtag got a lot of traction and a pizza company decided to cash in. Digiorno pizza tweeted “#whyistayed You had pizza.” The company retracted their tweet and apologized after learning of the circumstance of the tweet.

Both of these instances are a product of insufficient knowledge about circumstance.

Jeff Bezoz, Souq.com, and powerhouse markets of the east.

Amazon, Souq.com, and powerhouse markets of the east.

Jeff Bezos recently became the world’s wealthiest man and the Amazon CEO does not seem to be faltering. Amazon has become a power house by expanding their business model and have established themselves to be a formidable company on the stock exchange. The company has been building foundation in other parts of the world by investing heavily and building from the ground up. However, an unorthodox exchange happened and Amazon has set foot in the United Arab Emirates

With the recent acquisition of Souq, Amazon has had a first in terms of establishing itself in the middle east. With the company focusing on building from the ground up in other regions of the world, the direction of the company can be seen as a positive for the MENA region.

Souq started off as an an online retail company with heavy investors such as Baillie Gifford, IFC venture capital group, and MENA Venture Investments. Souq first legitimized itself with a solid payment and fulfillment infrastructure, and now has thousands of vendors using the website for its services. With Amazon now being its parent company, the future of the company seems to be secure and consistent.

However, competition arises from the east with company’s like Ali Baba in China, and even Indian ecommerce companies like Snapdeal and Flipcart. The two latter companies were in talks of a merger, but that deal fell through. Meanwhile, Amazon invests heavily to establish itself in India. It only remains to be seen what Amazon brings to the table when the product of the investments is unveiled.

As for Ali Baba, their 2016 single’s day sale unloaded a whopping $17.8 billion worth of merchandise in a span of 24 hours. The event was legitimized in a western sense when Idols such as David and Victoria Beckham rang in the day.
